Southeastern Baptist College put together a day of gritty baseball on Saturday at A.W. Watson Field, taking the opener in commanding fashion before a late rally fell just short in the second game of a doubleheader against Bob Jones University.
The Chargers came out swinging in Game 1, securing an 8-2 victory behind timely hitting and a strong outing from right-hander Tyler Miller. SBC wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first inning. Rod Evans got things started with a single to center, followed by a Brycen Brown groundout that brought in the game's first run. Tre'Von Wynn kept the pressure on with a triple to right field, and Daylon Collins finished the early surge with a sacrifice fly to give the Chargers an early 3-0 lead.
Miller kept Bob Jones in check through six and one-third innings, allowing just five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six. Brayden Bufkin came on in relief to shut the door and seal the win. Offensively, SBC tallied nine hits, led by Korbin Odom, Rodderian Evans, and Braylon McMillian, each recording two hits. McMillian drove in a team-high two runs, going 2-for-3, while Evans added two hits and a run scored.
Game 2 proved to be a tougher challenge. After falling behind 5-1 in the sixth inning, the Chargers rallied with heart, stringing together three clutch singles in the bottom half to close the gap to 5-4. The offense showed life, and the defense stood tall, keeping Bob Jones off the board the rest of the way. However, the comeback came up just short in the final innings.
Freshman Jacob Hitt got the start on the mound, grinding through five innings while allowing six hits and four runs, and striking out four. Austen Shirley led the offensive charge with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while McMillian continued his productive day with another multi-hit effort.
Despite the narrow loss, the Chargers showed resilience and character throughout both contests. With a strong Game 1 performance and a gutsy push in Game 2, Southeastern Baptist demonstrated the depth and determination that continues to define this team.
