LAUREL, MS – Southeastern Baptist College experienced a night of contrasting outcomes on Tuesday, securing a commanding 10-2 victory over Tougaloo in the first game before falling short in a 13-8 battle in the nightcap.
Game 1: Chargers Dominate in 10-2 Win
Fueled by a standout offensive performance from Austen Shirley, Southeastern Baptist cruised to a decisive 10-2 win. Shirley went 3-for-5 at the plate, sparking the Chargers' offense with key hits in the first, second, and sixth innings.
The Chargers wasted no time getting on the board, erupting for four runs in the opening frame. Shirley led off with a single, followed by a double from Daylon Collins, a single from Braylon McMillian, and a double from Coby Newell, each driving in a run. Shirley continued his hot streak in the second inning with another RBI single, extending the Chargers' lead.
On the mound, Tristen Henry delivered an impressive performance, allowing just two unearned runs over five innings while striking out five. Ethan Russell provided solid relief, tossing a scoreless inning with one strikeout.
Newell and McMillian joined Shirley with multi-hit performances, while Rod Evans displayed excellent discipline at the plate, drawing two walks. The Chargers' aggressive base running added another dimension to their attack, swiping six stolen bases—two each from Shirley and Evans.
Game 2: Late Surge Dooms Chargers in 13-8 Loss
Southeastern Baptist looked poised for a sweep after jumping out to an early five-run lead in the second game. Jeremiah McKinney played a pivotal role, going 1-for-1 with three RBIs, including a key two-run single in a six-run second inning.
The Chargers struck first when Shirley's sacrifice fly plated the game's opening run. However, Tougaloo responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning before Southeastern Baptist's explosive second frame reclaimed the lead at 7-3.
A late rally sealed the game for the Bulldogs as they pulled away for the 13-8 win. Despite the loss, Southeastern Baptist showcased strong plate discipline and aggressive base running, tallying 15 stolen bases. Andre Weaver led the charge with three walks, while Hayden Fontana, Korbin Odom, and McKinney each swiped multiple bags.
