Chargers Show Grit but Fall Short in Road Battle Against Pioneers

Box Score

The Chargers women's basketball team took to the road for an early-season rematch against Campbellsville University Harrodsburg, looking to avenge a narrow 2-point loss from their first meeting and break their current losing streak. Despite a resilient effort, the Chargers faced foul trouble and an untimely injury that ultimately contributed to their 64-44 defeat.

First Half Highlights

The game began with both teams trading baskets in a tightly contested first quarter. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 6-0 run, but the Chargers responded with a corner three from standout freshman Sydney Coward, setting the tone for her career night. Coward's sharpshooting kept the Chargers close, ending the first quarter trailing 16-12.

In the second quarter, the Chargers shifted momentum, outscoring the Pioneers 16-13. Coward continued to pace the Chargers' offense, connecting on key shots and helping her team remain perfect from the free-throw line in the first half (7-7). With 15 seconds left before halftime, Coward sank a baseline jumper to give the Chargers a 28-26 lead. However, the Pioneers answered back with a three-pointer with 3 seconds on the clock, reclaiming the lead at 29-28 going into the break.

Second Half Challenges

The third quarter brought challenges for the Chargers as one of their starters was sidelined with four fouls, allowing the Pioneers to capitalize and extend their lead. Despite solid defensive efforts, the Chargers entered the fourth quarter down 46-38.

The final quarter tested the Chargers' depth as they suffered an injury to a key starter. The Pioneers took advantage, outscoring the Chargers 18-6 in the final frame and sealing the 64-44 win.

Notable Performances

Despite the loss, Sydney Coward delivered a stellar performance, scoring a season and career-high 22 points, hitting 5 of 11 three-pointers and shooting 7 of 15 overall. Sarahia Hurd and Laura Cobb fought through foul trouble to contribute effectively, with Hurd nearly recording a double-double (8 points, 9 rebounds) and Cobb adding 8 points and 7 rebounds in limited minutes. Sanaa Holmes, making only her second start, impressed on the boards with four offensive rebounds and added two steals. Breyonce' Jim also showcased her rebounding ability from the guard position, while Avery Gwin brought energy and defensive tenacity off the bench.

Coach's Remarks

After the game, Coach Milligan praised his team's resilience and determination, particularly highlighting their season-low turnover rate. "I'm proud of the grit and hustle we showed tonight," said Coach Milligan. "We battled through adversity on the road and kept fighting until the end."
