Chargers Fought Hard, But Ultimately Fell Short in the Final Moments

Box Score

The Southeastern Baptist College Chargers fought hard against the Campbellsville University Harrodsburg Pioneers in a nail-biting match-up at the Chick-fil-A Classic, but ultimately fell short in the final moments with a score of 55-53.

Game Highlights:

  • First Quarter: The Chargers started off strong with a quick basket from starting point guard Breyonce' Jim, who set the tone for the Chargers' defensive game. Despite Jim's strong rebounding performance, where the 5'3" guard grabbed an incredible 17 rebounds—leading the team in an unusual rebounding stat for a player her size—the Chargers struggled defensively, giving up their highest points in a quarter this season (21). The Pioneers took a 21-15 lead by the end of the first, shooting well from beyond the arc (3 of 7) and perfect from the line.

  • Second Quarter: The Pioneers extended their lead to 10 points in the second, capitalizing on a 4-minute scoring drought from the Chargers. However, a crucial three-pointer from Coward at the 2:21 mark reignited the Chargers' offense, cutting the lead to seven by halftime.

  • Third Quarter: The Chargers' defense made a powerful resurgence, holding the Pioneers to just 6 points and overcoming the deficit to take a slim 1-point lead heading into the fourth. The defense was relentless, keeping the Pioneers scoreless for six straight minutes until #5 Davis managed a jump shot with 1:23 left in the quarter.

  • Fourth Quarter: In an intense back-and-forth, the teams traded baskets down to the last second. With the game tied at 53-53, a controversial blocking call with one second on the clock sent Pioneers' #4 Kavanaugh to the free-throw line. Kavanaugh sank both shots, securing the win for the Pioneers. A last-second half-court heave by Coward fell short.

Top Performers:

  • #3 Jim: 6 points, 4 assists, 17 rebounds
  • #12 Madden: 14 points (led Chargers in scoring)
  • #22 Hurd: 11 points
  • #23 Cobb: 10 points

Coach Milligan's Post-Game Comments: Coach Milligan acknowledged the effort from his team, especially in the second half, stating, "It was amazing just to be in the game at that point," praising the energy and resilience of his players. He noted the costly 27 turnovers and the need for the team to improve taking care of the ball. Regarding the final call, Milligan commented, "The block or charge call is a 50/50, and I thought the referee got it right."

Milligan concluded, "We just have to get better every day and we cannot let up."

Final Score: Pioneers 55, Chargers 53
