Chargers Win Home Opener, Giving Coach Mike Milligan a Victorious Debut

The Chargers women's basketball team kicked off their season in style, earning a solid 63 – 49 win over Ecclesia College in the home opener and marking a victorious debut for Head Coach Mike Milligan. In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Chargers displayed a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring in double figures and a stifling defense that set the tone for the game.

Sarahia Hurd was unstoppable on the boards and in the paint, notching a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds. She led the Chargers both offensively and defensively, helping the team build and maintain their lead. Kylee Madden added 17 points, showcasing her play-making ability with a team-high 4 assists, and Sydney Coward contributed 14 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Together, Kylee and Sydney powered the Chargers' 3-point barrage, combining for six treys. Breyonce' Jim led the team in assists, dishing out 6 crucial setups that kept our offense flowing. Coming off the bench, Sanaa Holmes and Avery Gwin brought energy and intensity, combining for 2 steals and 8 rebounds, energizing the team at key moments. Laura Cobb also made her presence felt on the boards, pulling down 8 rebounds to help the Chargers control the glass.

Defensively, the Chargers held the Royals to just 25% shooting, forcing 24 turnovers, and consistently pressuring their opponent. Ecclesia struggled to find rhythm against the relentless Chargers' defense and never led by more than three points. The Chargers maintained control throughout the game, opening up a lead as large as 18 points to spoil the return of Brad Phillips, former Chargers men's basketball coach and now head of Ecclesia's women's team.

This game was the second match-up in the Chick-fil-A Classic. In the opening game, Pensacola Christian College defeated Campbellsville University Harrodsburg 94-73. Ecclesia and Campbellsville University Harrodsburg will face off in the third game of the classic on Friday, October 25, at 4:15 p.m.

The Chargers will be back in action this Saturday, October 26, at 2:00 p.m., taking on Campbellsville University Harrodsburg. Come out and support the Chargers as they look to continue their strong start to the season!
